Regarding: Reconciliation Tip and TA Tools|
The software faces situations where there is not a logical answer so we don't automatically apply the tools available. Instead we allow users to make the choice if it applies. Here are a few comments to help guide you choices.
1. 1099 Sale Total:
We Select Reconcile Gain/Loss then select item b) "Show Details" to see what TA calculates. Close the Reconcile Gain/Loss dialog and look at the view selected by TA. If this matches the provided 1099 then we continue. If it does not then one must decide how to get better data. You can use TA to reconcile your list of trades but this is more work than most want to do. Often it is better to contact the broker and say: send me the data that matches what is in the 1099.
2. Ungrouped Sells:
We Select Reconcile Gain/Loss then select item c) "Show Details" to see what TA calculates. Close the Reconcile Gain/Loss dialog and look at the view selected by TA. At this point the question is why are these trades not closed. Here are some thoughts that are beyond the ability of software.
a) Before making major changes save a copy of your data: File/Save As Backup
b) Tools/Reconcile Baseline: This tool looks at each symbol to see if the first trade is a closing trade. If yes then an opening trade is missing. This is a hint. The solution is to either add the missing opening trade or maybe the trades are out of order and require a time adjustment for all trades. If you add the one missing opening trade it does not fix the other missing opening trades that caused them to appear in the current view. For this reason we like to take a step back and look at one symbol to see if there is a pattern.
c) Select Screen: Groups, Mode: By Symbol, View: Not Grouped All
Find a symbol with several not grouped to use as a test case. Then select Screen: Transactions, Mode: By Symbol, View: Positions... Look for the reason why the trades are not grouped.
d) Tools/Smart Time: This tool correct time errors where the broker used 12:00 for all trades. It will place Opening Trades at 9:00AM and Closing Trades at 3:00.
e) Tools/Sequence Error Discovery: This tool fixes errors where trades go long to short or short to long in one trade without stopping at zero. You can select all cases and apply the adjustment to all positions in a few clicks. There is not affect on the overall amount.
f) Tools/Long Short Discovery: This tool fixes errors where a trade should have been a short open but appears as long or should have been a long open and appears as a short. There is not affect on the price and amount, just the action. If you select Ignore then the trade is not changed. You can also change all at the same time.
g) At anytime you can double click on a trade and edit it or you can add missing data.
